An Unforgettable Journey of Learning, Engagement, and Global Insight
The 2024 Field Visit to Austria and Germany, organized by the Global Youth Leadership Development Council (GYLDC), offered an exceptional and transformative experience for the participants from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Spanning multiple cities, the tour provided a deep dive into the heart of international organizations, sustainability initiatives, and technological advancements, leaving a lasting impression on all involved.
1. United Nations Visit

The tour began with an eye-opening visit to the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV). The guided tour through the Vienna International Center offered participants a rare glimpse into the daily operations of the UN, making abstract concepts of international diplomacy and peacekeeping feel tangible and real.

One of the standout sessions was the lecture by Sanam Shantiaei at the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO). Shantiaei’s insights into global disarmament efforts were both sobering and inspiring, prompting participants to reflect on the delicate balance of global security.

The workshop on stakeholder engagement, led by expert Dagmar Silvius Zuchi at UNOV, was another highlight. Participants left with practical tools and strategies for effective stakeholder management, essential skills for any aspiring global leader.
2. Innovation in Sustainability

The visit to Erlebniswelt Spittelau, Vienna’s waste incineration plant, was nothing short of enlightening. The tour showcased how waste management can be transformed into a sustainable energy source, challenging the participants to think creatively about environmental solutions in urban settings.

At Huawei Germany, the focus shifted to the role of technology in sustainable development. The discussions on how innovations can drive progress towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were particularly thought-provoking, offering a fresh perspective on the intersection of tech and sustainability.
3. Academic and Research Engagement

IIASA, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, provided a deep dive into global challenges like climate change and energy sustainability. The interaction with leading researchers was invaluable, offering participants not just knowledge, but also a sense of urgency and responsibility in addressing these pressing issues.
4. Practical Insights from International Organizations

The sessions with UNOPS/ICAT and UN-Habitat were especially relevant for those interested in sustainable infrastructure and urban development. The insights into project management and urban resilience strategies underscored the complexity and importance of building sustainable and resilient communities in the face of rapid urbanization.
The visits to UNDRR and UNESCO-UNEVOC wrapped up the tour with a focus on disaster risk reduction and vocational education. These sessions emphasized the critical role of education and preparedness in creating resilient societies, a theme that resonated deeply with the participants.
5. Final Thoughts
