About the Program

The Green Design Engineer (GDE) is an emerging international professional recognition in sustainable engineering, awarded by the World Green Design Organization (WGDO).

Based on the Six Principles of Green Design and applicants’ engineering works, GDE recognizes professionals capable of minimizing resource consumption and reducing pollution across the entire lifecycle of engineering products and projects.

About WGDO

Founded in Brussels in 2013, WGDO is the world’s first international non-profit organization dedicated to promoting green design. WGDO is an EU Transparency Register NGO and holds Special Consultative Status with the United Nations ECOSOC, enabling direct participation in global climate and sustainability initiatives.

WGDO is also a member of the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO).

Who Should Apply

GDE is designed for engineers and technical professionals who:

  • Possess solid engineering expertise

  • Apply green design concepts in real projects

  • Aim to reduce resource use and environmental impact through engineering practice

Why Green Design Engineers Matter

The global green transition faces a critical shortage of qualified professionals. According to the International Energy Agency, clean energy investments driven by carbon neutrality are expected to create millions of new jobs by 2030.

GDE aligns with UNESCO’s Green Skills initiative and WFEO’s Sustainable Engineering agenda, serving as evidence of professional capability in the green economy. GDEs develop sustainable engineering solutions that contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

What Green Design Engineers Do

Green Design Engineers apply pre-planned green engineering practices to:

  • Identify key inflection points in industrial green transitions

  • Enable cross-industry collaboration for joint emission reduction

  • Promote sustainable economic growth beyond single-industry solutions

Engineering, Green Design & AI

Artificial Intelligence is now a key tool in engineering practice. When integrated with Green Design, AI and data empower Green Design Engineers to deliver efficient, innovative, and sustainable solutions.

Benefits of GDE Recognition

  • Access to global green job and project opportunities

  • Internationally recognized professional identity

  • Participation in the global Green Design Engineer community supported by WGDO and its partners

Scope of Evaluation

Evaluation covers, but is not limited to:

  • Products & Manufacturing

  • Energy & Transportation

  • Planning & Construction

  • Environment & Ecology

  • Digital Communication and related fields

  • Other relevant engineering sectors

Levels of Green Design Engineers

  • Senior Green Design Engineer

  • Green Design Engineer

  • Assistant Green Design Engineer

Evaluation is based on professional experience, engineering achievements, green design knowledge, and institutional recommendations.
