Course 15: Chemistry: The Structure, Reaction and Synthesis of Organics
I. Course Description
Organic chemistry not only plays an important role in life science, drug research and development, and material science, but is also the foundation of modern synthetic chemistry, promoting the development of many technologies and innovations. The study of organic chemistry not only deepens our understanding of the molecular structure and reaction mechanism in nature, but also provides strong support for solving global problems such as renewable energy and environmental pollution.
Organic chemistry is a science critical to chemistry, materials science, and biology because it deals with intermolecular interactions. This course mainly leads us to understand and understand organic chemistry, explore the diverse structures of organic matter, explore their behavior in chemical reactions, and design synthesis strategies to build specific organic molecules; focusing on organic chemistry and stereochemistry from organic structure, reaction and synthesis. At the same time, this topic will also guide students to realize the wide application of organic chemistry in daily life and scientific research, and lay a solid foundation for their future academic and professional development (organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, materials, medicine, etc.).
II. Professor Introduction
Brian Stoltz – Tenured professor at the California Institute of Technology
Professor Brian Stoltz received a Ph. D. in organic chemistry from Yale University (Yale University) and is now a tenured professor in the Department of Chemistry at the California Institute of Technology. He is renowned for his profound attainments in the field of organic synthetic chemistry. Stoltz Laboratory, named after its research base, focuses on developing innovative strategies dedicated to the synthesis of complex molecules with unique structures and biophysical properties. Stoltz Professors team is constantly breaking the boundaries of synthetic science, committed to efficient synthesis of bioactive compounds and developing new materials. Their research methods have widely influenced many frontier fields such as energy and nanotechnology.
As a fellow of the American Chemical Society, Professor Stoltz was awarded the 2018 American Chemical Society Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry and holds the National Science Foundation Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. He serves as the editorial board of both Tetrahedron and Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry, continuing to drive the frontiers of organic chemistry.
