Course 1: Pedagogy and Art History: A Comparative Study on Humanistic Education and Literary Development from an International Perspective
I. Course Description
At all times, at home and abroad, art, literature, education and religion have always been the key elements deeply rooted in historical occasions. With the continuous evolution of society, philosophical thoughts and literature continue to develop in various cultures and times, and precipitate and sublimate with the pace of society. In ancient Rome, the concept of three studies and four subjects began to form, which became the dominant subjects of the Middle Ages, emphasizing art, literature, education and religion like technology or methods of doing things. Track in the field of western philosophy has experienced early bud, preliminary forming, expansion and prosperity and multiple and deepening four stages, with more than two hundred years of history, including the ancient Greece and Rome, the Renaissance and modern art, literature, education, religion, formed the comprehensive field expansion and prosperity, the trend of diversity and deepening.
From a broader dimension, this course aims to dive into the fields of philosophy, art, culture, education and religion, with a systematic overview of their main historical and contemporary features in scholarship and research. The course will guide students to explore the differences in philosophical, artistic, educational, and religious cultural paradigms between different countries, providing students with an opportunity to comprehensively study global societies in a way with an international dimension. Through the concept of evidence-based practice, students will study the application of philosophy, artistic culture, education, and religion in diverse social and political contexts. The course is also dedicated to cultivating students research methods in the social sciences major, including literature review skills, research-based writing skills, independent critical thinking skills, etc. Under the guidance of the professor, students will complete comprehensive research reports showing their deep understanding and research results in this broader and more comprehensive interdisciplinary field.
II. Professor Introduction
Liam Francis Gearon – Tentenured Professor at Oxford University
Professor Liam Francis Gearon is a tenured professor in the Department of Education at the University of Oxford University, the founder and head of the Philosophy and Education Research Group at Oxford University, and the chairman and leader of several research institutions including Harris Manchester College and the School of Education at the University of Birmingham. Professor Gearon has made significant contributions in the field of civic education, writing and editing many influential books and articles. His important works include “World View in Religion and Education”, “Ludwig International University, Security and Intelligence Research Handbook”, and “Master Course in Religious Education”, which reflect his interdisciplinary approach and enormous impact on educational change and religious studies. His book “On Holy Ground” won the 2016 Educational Research Society Book Award.
