Course 22: Electronic Engineering and Biomedical Sciences: The Development of Wearable Devices for Health Monitoring and Diagnosis

I. Course Description

Wireless and mobile health is the use of wireless communication technologies and mobile devices to support and enhance healthcare and health management. This field includes multiple applications, such as telemedicine diagnosis, electronic medical records, health monitoring, and exercise tracking. These applications can be used through mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets and wearables, using the Internet and cloud computing technologies to achieve real-time data monitoring, transmission and processing. The application of wireless and mobile health can greatly improve the efficiency and quality of medical care, providing more convenient, real-time and personalized services for medical care. It can also help people to better manage their health, achieve prevention and early diagnosis, and improve their quality of life. However, wireless and mobile health also face some challenges, such as security and privacy issues, standardization and normalization issues, and user acceptance and engagement issues. Therefore, the development of related research and technology is also becoming increasingly important to ensure the sustainable development of wireless and mobile health.

This course will cover the fundamentals and curricular research on wireless and mobile health. Students will learn the basic steps required from conception to evaluation for the creation of wireless and mobile health systems through assigned readings, group discussions, and some practice projects. As wireless and mobile health is an interdisciplinary field, we will cover a range of literature on human-computer interaction, wearable systems, machine learning, and health. Reading and classroom activities will prepare students for the final creative assignment, which includes a research proposal for writing and presenting a wireless and mobile health system or research ideas. While this course will cover some technical aspects of wireless and mobile health, we find that students with diverse backgrounds who are encouraged to participate as they will work in an interdisciplinary team.
